COMARCI>>>COMARCI capacity building workshop in Makeni, Sierra Leone

NATCOM and the Ministry of Information and Communications in collaboration with the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization, hosted the COMARCI capacity building workshop on in Makeni on the 10-11th March 2010.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders in the industry including public sectors representatives from the Ministry of Education, Office of the National Security.

The Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization was represented by the its chief Executive Office Dr. Spio Garbrah who's is the brain child of the Commonwealth African Rural Connectivity Initiative. This capacity building workshop which is recorded as phase two of the COMARCI (phase I being the detailed research undertaken by the CTO in all commonwealth African Countries) created a forum for the expression of the needs, aspirations and contributions of local communicates including religious leaders and Paramount Chiefs representing the North, East and South of Sierra Leone.

Operators not only sponsored the workshop but showed their efforts their thus to improve rural connectivity in Sierra Leone. Upcoming service providers in the industry - Huawei, Altas and Tiwai demonstrated how the industry could be taken to another level with the use of new and affordable technology. The CTO's expertise in assisting countries understands the concept of rural connectivity initiative was aptly delivered emphasizing the need for Public Private Peoples Partnership. The people's ownership it was concluded is the backbone to the success of any rural connectivity initiative.

Contributions from participants included International delegates from the Ghana (NCC), Gambia (PURA) and Nigeria (Watra) added immense value to the workshop.
The workshop was held at one of Sierra Leones finest hotels, Wusum hotel and the two days workshop launched by the then Minister of Presidential and Parliamentary affairs Hon. J Koroma representative of His Excellency the President Dr. Ernest Bai- Koroma was deemed successful.
The media played a major role in bringing onboard people from all walks of life to be a part of these deliberations both nationally and internationally. The workshop ended with a hearty vote of thanks from the Coordinator of the COMARCI Workshop, Ms. Michala Mackay.
